Graduation Ceremony
The 2007/2008 season came to an end on Friday, May 30th at Lake Clementia as the scouts graduated into the next level. Parents and scouts were treated to hot dogs and chips at the amphitheater before each group took turns with their parents to accept the new colors and tags. Later the families were treated to a rocket display. Thanks to Karyn and all the den leaders for making it a memorable year and good luck to all the boys next year!

April 25 Pack Meeting
Troop 633 was treated to a visit by officers Aaron Thompson, Hans Merten and Hutch, one of the Sacramento Police Department's police dogs. Officer Thompson talked about what it was like in the K9 unit, the types of training both he and Hutch go through, and what were some of the common things they did on the field.

After the presentation, Officer Thompson allowed the cubs to meet and pet Hutch.

Detective Merten then showed some of the training techniques used by the K9 unit, including having Hutch attack the detective while he wore a protective arm guard.

Here one of the scouts get up close and personal with Hutch. The scout was no match as Hutch just snatched the arm guard and ran away.

While several scouts and parents took a closer look at Officer Thompson's squad car, a few cubs (and one pooch) took the moment to relax. Thanks to Officer Thompson, Merten and Hutch for the presentation!

Blue and Gold Ceremony
The Senior Webelos partook in the Arrow of Light ceremony, the most significant ceremony in their careers as cub scouts. The Arrow of Light is the highest honor a cub scout may receive, and the only cub scout badge that may be worn as a boy scout. The scouts had all their hard work acknowledged by their family, friends and leaders as they graduated to the rank of boy scouts. Below are the pictures of the ceremony. Congratulations to the Senior Webelos on the advancement!

Pinewood Derby Race
It was standing room only for the Pinewood Derby Race at the RMA Building. There were around three dozen cars participating, but with the enthusiasm by all who attended, one would have thought that everyone had an entry. All Scouts went home with the Pinewood Derby patch. Congratulations to all the winners, and to all the scouts and parents that participated in the event.
Click the pictures below for a larger view.

Trophies went to the top three of each race after multiple heats, top three cars overall, and top three "Best in Show". If there are any pictures you'd like to see posted, please email to Duc at ductruong@gmail.com, or email me to arrange an alternate way to send me the pictures.

Den 4 - California State Railroad Museum

On a beautiful Saturday morning, the Den 4 Tiger Cubs went to the California State Railroad Museum where they learned about the history of trains and the railroad, and also about the important role Sacramento played in that history. They watched a brief documentary about the impact of the railroad on the region, and also about the contributions made by people of different backgrounds. The cubs then meandered around the museum and were able to walk through various historic train cars and even got to watch model trains in an elaborate setup of a trainyard. Afterwards they all enjoyed pizza and a light romp on the fields before calling it a day at Old Sacramento.

January 17th Den 4 Meeting

The cubs took advantage of the good weather and met at Stonehouse Park, equipped with scooters and bikes. After settling down for some snacks, the cubs played "Tell It Like It Isn't" (Requirement 4D). After a complete round of whispering the secret phrase, the final cub repeated the exact same phrase as uttered by the first cub. After the game the cubs then enjoyed several sack races (Elective 35). After the races the cubs resumed the biking and scootering until the end of the meeting.
Help with Pinewood Derby Cars
Jennifer's neighbor Kent Johnson has offered to help by providing tools and guidance in building the cars (he has insider knowledge on how to make the cars go really fast). For those that need help please meet at 9:30 January 20th (Sunday) at Kent's house at 15004 Rio Circle, which is in the North. Bring your block of wood and an idea of what shape you'd like the car to be. Contact Jennifer if you have questions or need directions.
Reminder: the original handout with the Pinewood Derby instructions contain a number. This number is the cub's assigned car number and should be displayed on the car.

January 7th Den 4 Meeting
Jeanne Yamishiro and Tracy Dunn discussed the benefits of good nutrition and healthy eating. They lead the cubs through an exercise where the boys sorted out pictures of foods and categorized them as either "Healthy" or not "Not So Healthy". The cubs then divided into two groups and got real hands on experience in making their own fruit salads by dicing up apples, oranges, strawberries, bananas, grapes and kiwis.
To be done at home: Cubs and their adult partners are to learn about fire escape procedures if a fire should happen at home. Cubs are also to know and memorize at least one parent's cell phone number for use in emergencies.
